There are a variety of surgical neurologic conditions that can, at the very least, compromise your pet’s quality of life or, at worst, become a life threatening emergency. The surgeons at Veterinary Referral Center have years of specialized training to diagnose and treat these conditions to make sure that we can return you pet to the highest possible degree of function again. Whether a congenital or a traumatic injury to the spinal cord has occurred in your pet, we are ready and prepared to treat your companion. The most common disease that requires neurosurgery, an acute intervertebral disc rupture, may require emergency surgery to decompress the spinal cord, and we are available 24 hours a day to provide this service for you and your pet.
Neurosurgical procedures provided:
· Laminectomy for Intervertebral Disc Rupture
· Ventral slot for cervical Intervertebral disc rupture
· Spinal fracture and luxation repair
· Spinal distraction— fusion procedures for spinal instability
· Lumbosacral Stenosis
· CSF tap
· Atlantoaxial Luxation
· Spinal tumor removal
Postoperatively, your pet will be maintained on a continuous infusion of morphine pain medication to ensure that your pet is comfortable. We maintain our neurosurgery patients in the hospital postoperatively for several days to return them to mobility as soon as possible with physical therapy and intensive patient care. We strive at all time to make sure that your pet is on track for a successful and rapid recovery from their neurologic dysfunction.
The members of the Neurosurgery service team at VRC are Dietrich Franczuszki, DVM, MS and Jana Norris, DVM, DACVS.
